MAIN THEME: Environment
SUMMARY
In this initiative, cotton is planted in an agroecological way, intercropped with other crops and without pesticides. In the local context, community organization is fostered through women's-led community banks and income-generating training.
GOALS
Promoting the integration of workers into the agroecological cotton production chain, from planting, processing to clothing production.
DESCRIPTION
Conventional cotton is responsible for the consumption of 25% of the world's pesticides and is practically unanimous in the wardrobe of all Brazilians.
The Justa Trama Cooperative was born in 2005 with the purpose of promoting a social and environmental transformation in the cotton producers network. Currently, Justa Trama centralizes an entire chain involved in the production of clothing and products from agroecological cotton.
Justa Trama is the largest production chain in the solidarity economy segment, joining forces of workers from the Brazilian states of Rio Grande do Sul, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Ceará and Rondônia. This process, which begins in the planting of agroecological cotton, goes until the commercialization of pieces for Brazil and for the world, generating employment, income and environmental awareness.
RESULTS ACHIEVED
Justa Trama is recognized worldwide for its work in addressing poverty through an alternative development model, promoting commitment to the environment and the safety of farmers by strengthening the agroecological cotton production model in the country.
