SUMMARY
Community-Based Tourism (CBT) aims to generate economic benefits, promote the social development of residents and the conservation of the environment. Over the past 20 years, management of Pousada Uacari has become an important source of sustainable income for the residents of Reserva Mamirauá.
GOALS
Community-Based Tourism is a social technology whose main purpose is to contribute to the socio-economic development of Mamirauá Reserve's residents through an income alternative and the protection of the environment.
DESCRIPTION
Pousada Uacari is an enterprise run by the Mamirauá Institute and an association of residents of Mamirauá Reserve communities. In it, riverside communities have found a great option for income generation, social transformation and environmental preservation in the region.
Called Community-Based Tourism, the methodology enables local residents to carry out the tourism activity. They are guided by the principles of solidarity economy, local cultural valorization and, mainly, protagonism. In addition to generating income for local communities, it ensures the preservation of the environment.
RESULTS ACHIEVED
The 11 communities involved work directly in the rotation of activities, providing opportunities for all to share the economic benefits of tourism. In the last 11 years, more than R$ 3 million has already been generated through services and sales of local products.
